In Norse mythology, Yggdrasill is the name given to a great ash tree that connects all living things and all phases of existence. The World Tree runs like a pole through this world and the realms above and below it. Sometimes the World Tree is described as running through nine realms, from the shadowy depths of the underworld up to the heavenly abode of the gods. At other times, the trunk of Yggdrasill is said to anchor Midgard, the world of humans, while the tree's three great roots reach down into Jotunheim, the land of the frost giants; Niflheim, the land of mist; and Asgard, the home of the gods.
Yggdrasill is the inspiration behind the creation of this multi-stone pendant. One gorgeous Moss Agate (with stunning inclusions of green and red) represents the Trunk of Yggradsill. I chose this stone because Moss Agate is often considered to be the greatest stone to represent healing, growth and life. Two gorgeous pieces of pear-shaped Malachite represent the roots of the tree, extending down and outwards, reaching out to the realms below. At the bottom of the piece sits a shimmering green Labradorite (the stone of magic), whose otherworldly glow changes colour from green to aqua in different light and angles, symbolising the magic of these realms.
The setting of this piece comprises of a solid sterling silver 1.9mm twisted bail circle, a solid sterling silver hand-sawed back-plate, fine silver bezels around each stone, and sterling silver trims and accents. I have also hand-fabricated a little sterling leaf in the centre of the piece, to further symbolise the World Tree. The pendant has then been sanded smooth, oxidised, polished to a high shine, and strung onto a 72cm adjustable black vegan organic cotton cord. This means that it can be worn as a choker, long layering necklace, or anything in between! Like all my work, it is a completely unique piece made entirely by hand using recycled silver, environmentally-friendly methods and cruelty-free materials!
