'Fáfnir's Lair' - Australian Ruby & Tanzanian Ruby Zoisite
In Norse mythology, Fáfnir (also sometimes called Frænir) was a son of the dwarf king Hreidmar. He was gifted with a powerful and fearless soul, and he guarded his father's house of glittering gold and flashing gems. Legend has it that the Norse gods Odin, Loki and Hœnir, killed Fáfnir's brother, causing him to become ill-natured and overcome by greed. After escaping into the wilderness with his father's fortune, Fáfnir turned himself into a great dragon so that he could guard it.
In creating this piece, I wanted to capture this Legend I have always been so fascinated with. I chose two gorgeous stones that are often considered to be connected to Dragons; a stunning faceted Ruby from NSW, Australia, and a gorgeous blood-red Ruby Zoisite from Tanzania. As well as having this connection to Dragons, these stones are also often thought to have the properties of protection, passion and fortune; all things that to me, Fáfnir in many ways embodies.
The pendant setting itself is made from a thick, 24 gauge solid sterling silver hand-sawed back-plate. I have then sawed a solid sterling silver Fáfnir by hand, and placed him above the two gems so that he may guard them. I have used fine silver bezels (one crown, and one serrated) to surround each stone, as well as two gorgeous sterling beaded trims. The piece is framed with a thick beaded trim around it, and a 16 gauge (1.4mm) adjustable bail. The silver has then been oxidised black in certain parts to accentuate contrast and polished. Fáfnir's Lair hangs on a 72cm adjustable organic cotton cord, so that he may be worn as a choker, a long layering necklace, and anything in between. Like all my work, this pendant is a completely unique piece made entirely by hand, with recycled silver, cruelty-free materials, and environmentally-friendly methods!
