The signs were all there: my central heating broke down, I'd just bought warmer socks, I was aching to work with blue and white gems, I was ready to begin hibernation at home, and the Winter Solstice was creeping closer and closer.

Since then, I've launched myself into the endeavour that is Frostmere: a collection of hand-fabricated jewels inspired by frozen lakes, dark skies, misty weather and sunlight reflecting across frost.

Featuring Australian Opals, Larimar, Dendritic Opal, Porcelain Jasper, Moonstone, Blue Lace Agate, Aurora Opals, Smithsonite, Aquamarine and Monarch Opals, Frostmere will be filled with 30 rings and pendants, each a frozen snapshot of everything that's beautiful in these colder months.

A mere is the Old English name given to a broad but shallow lake, often formed by the retreat of glaciers at the end of the Ice Age. It seemed fitting to name this collection over sparkling bodies of water made from glaciers.

Each piece is my attempt to capture the images and feelings that come to mind when I think of Winter. Unlike so many of my other projects, there were no sketches drawn beforehand, no grand ideas and no great expectations.
